Rock and roll bed — do I really need an M1 tested one?

Looking at rock and roll beds for my T5 and the M1 tested ones from RIB or Scopema are £1,500+. I've seen people build their own or buy uncertified ones for £300-400. If I'm not planning to use the bed as a travel seat (I have enough seats already), do I still need M1 certification? What are the insurance implications? Just want a bed that folds flat and is comfortable.

If you're NOT using it as a travel seat, you don't legally need M1 certification. The M1 test is specifically about crash safety for seats that passengers sit in while the vehicle is moving. If it's purely a bed that you only use when parked, a DIY or uncertified one is fine. However, check with your insurance company — some insurers want to know about any modifications and might have opinions. I built my own for about £200 in materials and it's been great. Used 25mm box section steel and a decent mattress.

Just to add — even if you don't need M1 for the bed itself, if you've removed the original rear seats and replaced them with a bed, you might need to notify DVLA about the change of use (from panel van to motor caravan). This can actually save you money on insurance. Worth looking into the DVLA motor caravan conversion requirements.
